Ann Abbott is a scholar and educator whose work centers on student learning outcomes and the critical analysis of language community service learning, languages for specific purposes, language justice, and public humanities. She is deeply committed to developing curricular materials that reflect current research and support meaningful community engagement. Her most recent scholarly work takes the form of autoethnography, exploring the intersections of language, identity, and lived experience.
Dr. Abbott teaches SPAN 232: Spanish in the Community, a highly regarded course in which students work directly with Champaign-Urbana community members whose primary language is Spanish, applying linguistic skills in real-world contexts while advancing principles of language justice and civic engagement.
She is a proud alumna of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a Master’s degree in Spanish, and a Ph.D. in Spanish.
