The Public Service Internship Program offers driven college students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with public offices and non-profits, all while engaging in a summer-long policy project. Through this program, interns will build professional skills and develop critical research abilities by exploring a policy issue they care about. NextGen is committed to supporting students by providing a stipend to help offset transportation and other expenses. Recognizing that this may be many students’ first experience with in-depth research, we pair each intern with a dedicated mentor to guide them through the process and help them prepare to present their findings to local officials and key stakeholders. In the second half of the program, NextGen Scholars will participate in the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy Persuasive Writing Credential program. The Public Service Internship Program will create the leaders of tomorrow, changing communities one student at a time.

The weekly time commitment varies depending on programming and activities, but scholars should expect approximately 30 to 35 hours per week.
This program is designed to provide meaningful, real life experiences in public service. We seek students who demonstrate a genuine commitment to serving their communities. Strong applicants highlight leadership roles, campus involvement, and community engagement in their resume and essays. Use your essay responses to reflect thoughtfully on your experiences and to show us your character, values, and personality.
Yes. Scholars will engage with the full intern cohort through professional development workshops, mentorship sessions, webinars, and collaborative activities throughout the program.
Scholars will intern four days per week at their host site. During the second half of the program, scholars will also participate in virtual evening classes on Mondays and Wednesdays led by the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy. Through this coursework, scholars will develop a policy proposal and strengthen their persuasive writing skills in preparation for their final presentation at the conclusion of the program.
NextGen Scholars for Change partners with local elected officials and nonprofit organizations. Placements are made based on each scholar’s interests and career goals. Our team also provides resume, cover letter, and interview preparation to ensure scholars are well prepared for their placements.
