As the child of immigrant parents, I grew up believing education was my ticket out of poverty and a way to break generational barriers. While I was encouraged to become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer, no one told me I could work on policies that directly impact communities I call home.
That realization came when I interned at Congresswoman Delia Ramirez’s district office, where I learned firsthand how many constituents felt disconnected from their public officials and unaware of the free resources available. This experience inspired me to pursue opportunities in Washington, D.C., where I interned through the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute. Driven by these experiences, I founded NextGen Scholars for Change (NGSFC) to empower first-generation students in Chicago and the Chicagoland area by offering opportunities for them to become leaders in public service. Our programs provide students with mentorship, leadership training, and hands-on experiences in public policy, helping them make an impact locally while preparing them for national opportunities in Washington, D.C., and beyond.
